Department: NYCT – SIRTOA, Operations Support

Location: 845 Bay Street, Staten Island, NY 10304

Position Title: Engineering, Emerging Talent Intern

Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate)

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.

Overview of Department

SIR (Staten Island Railways) Engineering provides comprehensive engineering services crucial for the seamless operation, successful execution of capital projects, and effective support for third-party work. These services encompass a wide range of critical activities including, but not limited to, design and specification review, conducting detailed surveys, verifying contractor submittals, strategic planning, and providing essential oversight for various engineering initiatives.

Responsibilities

The intern will actively collaborate with lead Engineers, gaining invaluable hands-on experience by supporting a diverse array of engineering activities. These responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with Station Rehabilitation and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Improvements, contributing to enhancing accessibility and modernizing facilities.
  • Supporting Track Replacement projects, which are vital for maintaining the safety and efficiency of the railway system.
  • Contributing to Switch Replacement initiatives, essential for ensuring reliable and flexible train operations.
  • Participating in the Procurement of New Heavy Equipment, crucial for both construction and ongoing maintenance activities.
  • Aiding in the Radio (Walkie Talkie) Upgrade project, involving the transition to a modern monopole backbone communication system.
  • Providing essential Third-Party Support, collaborating with various external agencies such as Con Edison, NYCDOT, NYSDOT, NYCDEP, and NYCEDC on inter-agency projects.
  • Assisting with Bridge Inspections and assessments of Structural Integrity, ensuring the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure.
  • Supporting Structural Painting and Overcoating projects, which are important for asset protection and maintenance.

Projects

The intern will have the opportunity to work closely with lead Engineers on key projects, providing direct support and gaining practical experience in large-scale engineering endeavors. These projects include:

  • T-80289, Track & Switch Phase II: A significant project focused on enhancing the railway’s core infrastructure.
  • S-80501 – SIR Radio Upgrade: A critical communication modernization initiative.
  • C-80285 – Stapleton Viaduct Rehabilitation: Included as part of the broader MTA GEC Bundle for the Staten Island Railway, focusing on the structural rehabilitation of a vital viaduct.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must, demonstrating competency in essential office productivity tools.
  • The candidate should possess strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, vital for effective project contribution and team collaboration.
  • The candidate should be able to work effectively under pressure and prioritize tasks efficiently in a dynamic environment.
  • The candidate should exhibit a keen eye for detail, coupled with the ability to work both independently and as an active, contributing team player.

Required Education

  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least a 2.8 GPA.
  • Major(s) Preferred: Engineering Major – any of the following: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Computer.
