Job Description: ENGINEER INTERN 1

This job posting is for an Engineer Intern 1 position with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), specifically within Section 22 – Materials Testing. This section is responsible for the Department’s Materials Quality Assurance Program and geotechnical exploration and testing programs.

Key Responsibilities (at the Engineer 5 level, after training):

• Assisting Engineer Supervisors in managing, supervising, budgeting, and coordinating lab personnel and operations for various testing labs (adhesives, aggregates, cement, chemical, concrete, paint, physical, quantitative, and soils).
• Applying knowledge of specifications to determine material acceptance and verifying proper documentation.
• Reviewing specifications and testing procedures to ensure lab conformance.
• Training lab personnel in testing equipment, safety, and procedures to achieve accurate and timely results.
• Providing input for the development, implementation, and maintenance of qualification procedures for potential sources and ensuring conformance to specifications.
• Providing technical assistance to Districts, Project Engineers, Construction, Design, and outside contractors/consultants.
• Developing and recommending changes to procedures and specifications.
• Certifying test results for compliance with specifications.
• Assisting with maintaining AASHTO R 18 accreditation.
• Coordinating with Engineer Supervisors and District Laboratories for the Annual District Laboratory Accreditation Program.
• Participating in technical committees associated with AASHTO and ASTM standards.
• Performing other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering *plus• one of the following:
• Two years of licensed engineering experience; *or• • Six years of professional engineering experience.
• A master’s degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
• A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
• Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.
• There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.

Salary:

• $4,167.00 – $7,502.00 Monthly
• Special Entrance Rates (biweekly): Engineer Intern 1 – $2,115.20, Engineer Intern 2 – $2,263.20, Engineer 3 – $2,671.20, Engineer 4 – $2,952.00, Engineer 5 – $3,158.40
