Internship, State Policy (Fall 2026) | Tesla

The Tone:
This is a full-time internship at Tesla, located in an Undisclosed Location, expected to start August 2026 and continue through the entire Fall term (through December) or into early Spring 2027, if available. Tesla is a global organization that designs, develops, manufactures, and sells electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, solar panels, and related products and services, driven by a passion to recognize emerging talent. This critical role is part of the Energy Policy Team and is vital for shaping the company’s energy future by contributing to the creation and implementation of regulatory and legislative strategies for its advanced energy products. Interns are placed in positions where they will grow both technically and personally, working on projects critical to their team’s success.

• Team: Energy Policy Team
• Mission: Create and implement the company’s regulatory and legislative strategies at the state and local level for residential battery energy storage, solar, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), grid-scale battery energy storage, and other energy products.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support Policy Research: Support the policy team by meticulously summarizing and analyzing regulatory filings, developing comprehensive briefings, researching pertinent legislation, and managing complex, cross-functional projects that are critical to the team’s success.
• Drive Initiative Development: Assist with the development of new policy and business initiatives, contributing to the strategic direction related to energy storage and solar products.
• Complete Capstone Project: Undertake and develop a capstone project focusing on a priority charging or energy policy issue, culminating in a presentation, research report, or policy brief at the internship’s completion, showcasing experiences gained and lessons learned.
• Advise Internal Stakeholders: Work closely with various internal teams to gather cross-functional input, providing timely and accurate advice on public policy developments relevant to Tesla’s energy priorities.
• Engage External Partners: Collaborate strategically with external stakeholders, including utilities, regulatory bodies, and industry groups, to amplify public policy priorities related to residential battery energy storage, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and grid-scale storage.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student currently pursuing a graduate degree in a relevant field such as Political Science, Public Policy, Technology Policy, International Studies, or related disciplines, with a clear focus on energy and sustainability.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience and understanding of the federal, state, and local legislative and regulatory processes, gained through prior work and/or academic experience; capable of making a minimum 6-month commitment to the internship, preferably full-time (40 hours per week).
• Skills: Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including the ability to successfully manage multiple complex, cross-functional projects simultaneously; high-level research and sophisticated writing abilities for policy briefs and reports.
• Bonus: Direct EV charging or energy policy experience obtained within government entities, relevant non-profits, public interest groups, or industry associations is strongly preferred.
