Job Summary

The employee communications intern will play a vital role within the Department of Communication, assisting in the promotion of Michigan Medicine’s extensive clinical care, research, and education enterprises to our more than 35,000 employees. The intern will collaborate closely with the employee communications team, leveraging various channels such as social media, photography, storytelling, videos, digital signage, and departmental newsletters to effectively communicate key messages. Successful candidates will exhibit excellent writing and verbal communication skills, coupled with adaptability, an eagerness to learn, enthusiasm, and creativity.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop, research, and write engaging stories and announcements for direct distribution to internal audiences and employee social media pages.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department of Communication Creative Services team to plan, edit, and create compelling videos, photo galleries, or podcasts.
  • Develop content and monitor engagement across various social media platforms, posting stories related to employee recognition, contests, and institutional updates.
  • Create talking points and develop related supporting materials, such as Q&As and presentations, as needed to support strategic messaging, special events, and crisis communications.
  • Work closely with the employee communications team to support various departments with their strategic communication plans, graphics, recognition initiatives, and other needs.
  • Organize and actively participate in both on-site and virtual promotional events to support institutional priorities and foster greater employee engagement.
  • Travel throughout the health system to capture photos and meet with team members to facilitate their recognition across various platforms.
  • Attend special events to take photos and conduct interviews with attendees for potential feature stories and social media posts.

Required Qualifications*

  • Open to currently enrolled college students.
  • Demonstrated strong writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt materials effectively depending on the target audience.
  • Must be versatile in working with diverse stakeholders within a complex organization and adept at managing tasks under deadlines.
  • Preferred, but not required: Experience in video editing, photography, and graphic design.

Additional Information

Work Mode: This position will be primarily remote, with on-site attendance required as needed for specific tasks or events. Collaboration with Department of Communication team members will primarily occur through staff meetings, emails, Zoom, and Teams calls, and other digital communication forms.

Job Timeframe: The anticipated timeframe for this internship is tentatively mid-May to mid-August 2026. However, flexibility regarding start and end dates can be accommodated based on the candidate’s availability.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Supervision: This position will report directly to a member of the employee communications team.

Pay Rate: $15 per hour.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts comprehensive background screening and pre-employment drug testing for all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer. A third-party administrator may be utilized to conduct background screenings, which are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
