What We Look For In an Elementary School Math Tutor

  • Advanced Subject Mastery:
    • Deep knowledge of core elementary math concepts including number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, basic fractions and decimals, measurement, time, money, geometry shapes, patterns, and introductory data interpretation.
    • Ability to explain counting strategies, regrouping, and fact fluency while building strong arithmetic foundations for upper elementary and middle school readiness.

    • Skilled at breaking down multi-digit operations, fraction concepts, and word problems using hands-on manipulatives, drawings, and visual models.
    • Guides students through skip counting, place value understanding, basic geometric reasoning, and measurement conversions.
    • Emphasizes discovery-based learning and connects math to everyday contexts like cooking, shopping, and telling time.
  • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction:
    • Familiar with elementary math standards for grades one through five.
    • Aware of common challenges such as regrouping in subtraction, understanding fractions as parts of a whole, and memorizing multiplication facts.
    • Adapts instruction using base-ten blocks, fraction strips, games, and multi-sensory approaches to support young learners at varying developmental readiness levels.
  • Effective Teaching Methods:
    • Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with and explain material using multiple approaches.
    • Proven ability to adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
    • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
