What You’ll Actually Do
• Deliver Personalized Instruction: Provide engaging 1-on-1 online math instruction to individual elementary school students, focusing on core concepts like number sense, place value, and basic operations.
• Guide Conceptual Understanding: Skillfully break down complex mathematical concepts, such as multi-digit operations and fractions, using hands-on manipulatives, drawings, and visual models to ensure deep comprehension.
• Adapt Teaching Strategies: Tailor instruction to meet diverse learning needs and styles of young learners, employing tools like base-ten blocks, fraction strips, and games to support varying developmental readiness levels.
• Leverage Platform Technology: Utilize the AI-powered Tutor Copilot to enhance sessions with real-time instructional support, generate lessons efficiently, and implement engagement features, saving valuable prep time.
• Manage Tutoring Logistics: Set your own flexible schedule, accept both pre-scheduled and on-demand tutoring requests, and simply invoice for your sessions while Varsity Tutors handles all payment processing.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess deep knowledge of core elementary math concepts, including number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, basic fractions and decimals, measurement, time, money, geometry shapes, patterns, and introductory data interpretation. You should also be familiar with elementary math standards for grades one through five and understand how to build strong arithmetic foundations for upper elementary readiness.
• Experience: Demonstrated ability to effectively explain counting strategies, regrouping, and fact fluency. Proven skill in breaking down complex concepts, guiding students through skip counting and measurement conversions, and emphasizing discovery-based learning by connecting math to everyday contexts. Experience adapting instruction to individual learning needs and styles using various tools and multi-sensory approaches.
• Skills: Strong communication skills combined with a friendly and engaging teaching style are essential. You must be proficient in identifying concepts students commonly struggle with and explaining material using multiple approaches, ensuring conceptual understanding and effective problem-solving strategies.
• Bonus: Awareness of common challenges students face, such as regrouping in subtraction, understanding fractions as parts of a whole, and memorizing multiplication facts, allowing for proactive and targeted support.
