Job Description
St. Charles is a progressive community located in the scenic Fox Valley about 30 miles west of Chicago. Our award-winning downtown, historic neighborhoods, new growth, and diversity of land uses, offer a variety of interesting engineering and environmental opportunities.
We are seeking self-motivated college students with a positive attitude and strong work ethic for an Electrical Engineering Internship. This internship is geared toward undergraduate or graduate students seeking to expand professional knowledge and skills in the electric engineering of a municipal electric utility.
Examples of Duties
This position, under the general supervision of the Public Works Manager – Electric, is responsible for supporting the electric engineering office in a wide variety of engineering-related functions and providing operational support. This role involves performing technical and non-technical tasks both in the field and in the office. Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and interpreting construction designs and specifications.
- Preparing or assisting in the preparation of construction documents for capital improvement projects.
- Performing inspections of construction projects, measuring quantities, and preparing reports, cost estimates, and payouts.
- Coordinating utility investigations and engaging with contractors.
- Performing data collection, verification, and documentation of assets in the field.
- Assisting in managing documentation by updating, revising, coding, categorizing, and preserving engineering calculations, records, drawings, etc.
- Aiding in resolving resident concerns, complaints, and requests for information.
- Preparing reports, conducting research, and performing general office work, such as scanning and filing.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student for Fall of 2026, earning a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a similar field (upon selection, eligibility verification from the student’s academic advisor will be required).
- Applicants should possess a base knowledge of electrical utilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and provide professional customer service.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to make complex calculations and prepare and interpret plans, drawings, and single-line diagrams.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and CAD drafting methods and equipment preferred.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors, possibly in adverse weather conditions, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
- If selected, successful completion of a background check, drug screen, physical, and functional capacity evaluation will be required.
Supplemental Information
- Starting pay is $20/hr.
- Expected to work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, approximately mid-May to mid-August.
- Work over school breaks may also be available.
