Job Description: Electrical Engineer – STERIS Life Sciences VHP Team

This role is responsible for the design, development, and documentation associated with our electrical controls systems. This includes:
• Electrical controls hardware
• Electromechanical interfaces and sensors
• Designing to desired machine specifications
• Compliance to electrical codes and safety standards
What You Will Do:
• Design and Development:
• Work as a collaborative engineering team member applying Electrical Engineering principles to develop creative design solutions for electromechanical machine controls.
• Confirm electrical system and electrical component capabilities and ensure quality by designing and performing test procedures and studies, writing reports, evaluating specifications, and completing calculations.
• Assist with the selection and verification of hardware, including analog and digital sensors.
• Create and update electrical design drawings using AutoCAD Electrical, including schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and wire harness diagrams.
• Provide electrical guidance to designers and technicians.
• Review engineering prints for completeness and accuracy.
• Design, build, and test prototypes and test fixtures with the engineering team, including control panels and wire harnesses.
• Aid with Programmable Logic Controller component selection (primarily Siemens), PLC program testing, and Ladder Logic design for system and component test stands.
• Interact with vendors and suppliers to select electrical components and source subassemblies that suit desired machine specifications and comply with the appropriate standards.
• Exhibit a working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, especially EN 61010-1 Low Voltage Directive, EN 61326-1 EMC, EU RED, FCC, RoHS, EN 60204-1 Machinery Directive and NEC NFPA 70E for electrical safety compliance and CE/UL marking.
• Monitor design concerns and required changes, advise engineering management on risk level, research suitable solutions, and estimate cost and time required to complete.
• Assist with the design, development, testing, and report generation for Special Sales Orders (SSOs) and Current Product Support (CPS) projects.
• Communication and Collaboration:
• Travel to various sales and service meetings, engineering summits, industry conventions, and customer sites. Travel time is approximately 10%, with opportunities for international travel.
What You Need to Be Successful:
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university.
• Minimum of 2 years of related Electrical Engineering experience. New graduates will be considered with a minimum of 2 co-ops or internships.
• Experience with electrical engineering development tools, specifically AutoCAD Electrical.
• Self-motivated, innovative, and collaborative product development team member.
• Proficient problem solver with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
What Will Help You:
• Electrical Design experience including schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, sheet sets, project files, and managing electrical symbol libraries with AutoCAD Electrical, exposure to EPLAN Electric P8 is also beneficial.
• 3D modeling of wire harnesses and bundles, especially using PTC Creo Harness.
• Engineering Part print creation, specifically with PTC Creo.
• PTC Windchill or Drawing Control System/Product Lifecycle Management Tool experience.
• Selection and Procurement of Sensors, both digital & analog, and Controls Equipment.
• Familiarity with PLCs, primarily Siemens with some Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation.
• Basic knowledge of PLC programming, either ladder logic or text.
• Experience with Siemens TIA Portal and Rockwell Automation Studio 5000.
• Familiarity with User Interface technology, HMIs, touchscreen displays, and printers.
• Understanding of machine communication protocols, data acquisition, and interfacing with building management systems.
• Working knowledge of electrical systems, troubleshooting, and test design.
• Experience with LEAN or Six Sigma methodology.
