About the Opportunity
WSP is seeking an Early Career Environmental Engineer to join our team in Portland, ME. This role offers the chance to engage in a diverse range of environmental assessment, inspection, and remediation projects. The successful candidate will provide local technical assistance for investigations of soil, air, and groundwater, and contribute to protection and mitigation efforts related to water supply, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, and pollution control. A key aspect of this role involves generating accurate and concise documentation, ensuring all deliverables meet or exceed acceptable industry standards.
Your Impact (Key Responsibilities)
- Collect and compile environmental data from samples (air, soil, water, sludge, etc.) for engineering analysis under general supervision.
- Maintain stringent quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
- Perform essential engineering calculations, develop cost estimates, validate data, and prepare reports.
- Assist with fundamental professional environmental engineering tasks concerning air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial and agricultural facilities, pollution sources, existing site conditions, water resources, and underground storage tanks.
- Provide entry-level technical assistance on various environmental issues and verify site characteristics.
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebooks.
- Strictly comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including meticulous maintenance of sample collection, location data, statistical documentation, and logbooks.
- Complete all assigned training tasks diligently.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as dictated by business needs.
Who You Are (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a strong analytical mindset.
- Familiarity with concepts aimed at reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products.
- Familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Competent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of expressing ideas effectively and professionally to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Proficient self-leadership, demonstrating attention to detail, strong multi-tasking abilities, and effective prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work both independently under general supervision and collaboratively as part of a team to achieve business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
- This is a full-time onsite position.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and the ability to adhere to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
- Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
- Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
- Membership and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.
