Penske Distribution Center Management (DCM) Internship

Major Responsibilities:
As a DCM Intern, you will be deeply involved in critical aspects of distribution center operations, gaining exposure to various functions and developing essential management skills:
- People Management & Development: You will engage in core leadership functions, including communicating clear, specific, and measurable performance standards to associates. This involves actively monitoring key performance markers such as attendance and productivity, providing constructive counseling when necessary, and offering timely recognition for outstanding achievements to foster a positive and high-performing team environment.
- Operational Excellence & Efficiency: You will play a pivotal role in identifying opportunities for improvement within dispatch and warehouse operations. This includes evaluating existing preferred work methods and recommending data-driven changes to enhance overall productivity. Additionally, you will provide critical relief coverage for operational duties during associate absences or time-off, ensuring seamless continuity. A strong working knowledge of the site’s operating systems will be crucial for maintaining operational compliance and effectively resolving exceptions. Accurate and timely completion of all necessary records and reports is also a key responsibility.
- Financial Acumen & Control: This role requires an understanding of financial compliance. You will help ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures related to critical areas such as inventory accuracy and control, efficient processing of returns, and meticulous handling of damages. A key aspect of your learning will be comprehending the direct relationship between daily operational decision-making and the profitability of the business.
- Safety Leadership & Compliance: Your contribution to a safe working environment is paramount. You will ensure that day-to-day management and associate activities are in strict alignment with the location’s safety strategy. This involves providing associates with essential safety communication, comprehensive training, constructive feedback, and clear direction to ensure safe performance. You will also help ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies and company safety policies and procedures.
- Growth Initiatives & Customer Experience: You will develop a deep understanding of the location-specific customer goals and objectives. This insight will enable you to identify and propose areas that could significantly benefit from Continuous Improvement (CI) efforts, directly contributing to enhanced customer satisfaction and business growth.
- Fleet & Asset Utilization: You will contribute to the efficient use of resources by properly planning work assignments to ensure the effective utilization of both fleet vehicles and warehouse equipment, optimizing operational flow and minimizing downtime.
Intern Qualifications:
We are seeking ambitious and dedicated individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Academic Pursuit: Currently pursuing a related business degree, demonstrating a foundational understanding of relevant principles.
- Academic Standing: Must be entering your junior or senior year of college. A 3.0 GPA or higher is preferred, indicating a strong academic record.
- Foundational Education: High School diploma or GED is required.
- Logistical Commitment: Must be able to commute to the operation daily, demonstrating reliability and commitment.
- Attendance: Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job.
- Work Environment Adaptability: Ability to work effectively in non-climate controlled conditions as needed.
- Leadership Potential (Preferred): Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience is preferred, showcasing your ability to guide and motivate others.
- Practical Experience (Preferred): Previous blue-collar work experience is preferred, indicating a hands-on work ethic and understanding of operational environments.
- Technical Proficiency: Basic computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Software Adaptability: Ability to quickly learn and effectively use proprietary software is required.
- Flexibility (Preferred): Flexibility to rotate through different shifts to gain comprehensive experience is preferred.
- Essential Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead a small team, work independently, multi-task, manage time effectively, exhibit strong organizational skills, maintain flexibility, and execute tasks with precision are all required.
