Job Description: NYS Parks Capital Bureau Internship

Duration: May – September 2026

Location: West Babylon, NY

Hours: 8am – 4pm (Monday – Friday)

Pay Rate:

  • Undergraduate: $19.04/hour
  • Graduate: $21.57/hour

Overview

NYS Parks is a diverse agency responsible for over 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, and boat launches, which saw a record 88 million visitors in 2024. The Capital Bureau within NYS Parks plays a crucial role in managing the design and construction of new park facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of existing structures and infrastructure. The Bureau also encompasses an Energy division focused on decarbonizing agency operations and transitioning facilities to renewable energy sources.

The Long Island District of the NYS Parks Capital Bureau is seeking talented college students studying architecture, landscape architecture, or engineering. The selected interns will assist with design and construction management at various state parks across Long Island, including prominent locations such as Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Montauk Point, and Belmont Lake State Park.

Job Duties

As an intern with the NYS Parks Capital Bureau, Long Island District, your responsibilities will include:

  • Design Participation: Engaging in the design processes for new and rehabilitation projects, encompassing various systems for bathhouses, maintenance and concession buildings, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, and coastal and green infrastructure.
  • Construction Project Support: Assisting in the preparation of time schedules, cost estimates, material approvals, and other tasks vital to the supervision of construction projects.
  • Contract Administration Assistance: Aiding in the processing of necessary paperwork for construction contracts, including procurement RFQs for purchase orders, minority business requirements searches, insurance coverage documentation, wage rate documents, claims, releases, and payment records.
  • Document Review: Reviewing submittals, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance and quality.
  • Meeting Participation: Attending meetings, participating in discussions, and accurately recording minutes.
  • Site Visits and Meetings: Providing support for current construction projects through site visits and attendance at project meetings.
  • Technical Documentation: Drafting NYS Parks standard details and writing technical specifications to assist with the preparation of projects for the bidding process.
  • Presentation & Documentation: Preparing presentations and assisting with comprehensive project organization and documentation.
  • Data Management: Recording data, preparing records, and maintaining files essential for the efficient functioning of the Capital District unit.

Qualifications

There are no minimum qualifications for this title per Civil Service. However, candidates must meet the additional operational needs specified below.

Additional Comments & Operational Needs

  • Eligibility: This internship is exclusively open to currently enrolled SUNY students.
  • Academic Status: Candidates must be current undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate students pursuing a degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or engineering at a SUNY institution.
  • Communication Skills: Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Technical Proficiency: Candidates should be proficient in industry-standard software, including AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and MS Office.
  • Driver’s License: Candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows legal operation of a motor vehicle in New York State. This is a mandatory term and condition of employment.
