Job Description

About Canon Production Printing:

Canon Production Printing (CPP) is a global company developing and manufacturing high-tech printing products and workflow software for the commercial printing market. A part of Canon, a worldwide leader in imaging technologies and services, CPP operates across three continents with approximately 3300 employees (as of the end of 2022). Its global headquarters are located in Venlo, Netherlands. They produce commercial-size printers focusing on high-volume printing with high speed, low operational costs, high quality, and flexibility.

Job Description: Data Science Internship – Pattern Detection in Printhead Nozzle Data

Assignment Overview: This internship focuses on developing and improving methods for detecting failure mechanisms in inkjet printer printheads. Printhead failures significantly impact print quality and are costly to replace. The data consists of nozzle performance information collected every few seconds, including nozzle status (Air, blocked nozzles, electrical failure). The goal is to detect patterns in this data, both spatially (nozzle position) and temporally (development of failures over time), to identify failure mechanisms.

Specific Tasks:

Develop automated methods to detect known patterns of printhead nozzle failures in both space and time.
Develop methods to detect unknown patterns of printhead nozzle failures.
Optimize existing methods by incorporating additional information such as error codes or printer usage data.
Handle large datasets: The internship will involve processing data from hundreds of nozzles per printer, collected every few seconds.
Work with limited failure data: The dataset contains thousands of printheads, but the number of failures for each mechanism is relatively small (20-30 or less).

Challenges: The project presents challenges in pattern recognition from noisy data with a limited number of failure instances, requiring the development of robust and efficient algorithms. The intern will need to deal with large amounts of data effectively.

Required Skills and Experience:

• Currently studying Data Science or Data Analytics, pursuing an MSc internship or graduation project.
• Available for a 5-8 month internship (minimum 4 days/week) starting February 1st, 2025.
• Critical thinking and curiosity.
• Basic Python and SQL knowledge.

Benefits:

• Challenging assignment with skilled coaching.
• Internship/graduation compensation of €500 per month.
• Travel cost compensation (if applicable).
• Networking opportunities.
• Collaborative work environment emphasizing innovation and ownership.
