Job Title: Data Science Intern

Company: HSB (Hartford Steam Boiler) – A Munich Re company

Location: Hartford, CT, United States (Hybrid Schedule)

About the Internship:

As a valued Data Science Intern at HSB, you will gain insights into a career at one of the world’s largest reinsurance companies. You will work directly with HSB’s Data Science team on large-scale machine learning projects, supporting major business areas such as insurance, engineering, or technology solutions.

Desired Qualifications & Education:

  • Education Level: MS or PhD Student in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related applied science with a heavy quantitative emphasis. Exceptional undergraduate students will also be considered.
  • Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate is adept at using large data sets to find opportunities for product and process optimization.

Required Skills:

  • Programming: Strong experience with Python/R/SQL, with the ability to write well-documented, production-level code.
  • Statistical Knowledge: Practical knowledge & experience with statistical methods.
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work creatively in a problem-solving environment.
  • Basic Software Engineering: Skills in Git, API, Docker Container, and DevOps best practices.

Preferred Skills (Plus Points):

  • Experience with Spark and distributed computing.
  • Experience with Azure cloud development.
  • Experience with learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience developing or experimenting with generative AI models (e.g., LLMs) and associated utilities/workflows.

Internship Logistics:

  • Start Date: May 2026.
  • Work Schedule: Hybrid schedule, including working on-site in the Hartford, CT office and working from home.
