Job Description
Job Title: Data Pipeline & Reporting Intern (or Junior Data Engineer/Analyst)
This role is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands-on experience in data engineering and analytics within a robust industrial setting. You will be instrumental in building and maintaining the data infrastructure that supports critical business insights and operational efficiency for a leading railroad solutions provider.
Key Responsibilities:
- Data Pipeline Development & Maintenance:
- Assist in the creation and upkeep of data pipelines, facilitating the flow of information between operational systems and various reporting tools.
- Support the integration of diverse data sources, including Azure DevOps, ticketing systems (e.g., KACE), and uptime monitoring platforms, into a unified data ecosystem.
- Data Modeling & Optimization:
- Collaborate with Data Scientists to structure and optimize data models, specifically tailored for efficient and insightful Power BI reporting.
- Contribute to the backend optimization of dashboards and overall reporting infrastructure to enhance performance and user experience.
- ETL/ELT Processes & Data Quality:
- Develop and rigorously test automated data transformation processes (ETL/ELT), ensuring data is accurately extracted, transformed, and loaded.
- Actively ensure data accuracy, implement robust validation procedures, and maintain high data hygiene standards across all reporting sources.
- Documentation & Collaboration:
- Contribute to comprehensive documentation of data architecture, integration workflows, and data governance practices.
- Engage in cross-functional collaboration with software, hardware, analytics, and product teams to support and drive customer reliability initiatives.
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (with or without reasonable accommodation).
- Occasional travel (up to 10%) to customer offices or field validation sites may be required.
- Potential requirement to obtain railroad security clearance.
- Ability to work in both typical office environments and occasional field settings.
- Willingness to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots when required in field environments.
- Ability to handle typical office conditions and occasional field environments when supporting validation activities.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited university.
- Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with SQL and fundamental data modeling concepts.
- Python or a similar scripting language experience is preferred.
- Understanding of APIs and data integration principles.
- Experience utilizing Git for version control and collaborative development.
- Proficiency with Excel; exposure to Power BI is a significant plus.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while following structured guidance.
- Pre-employment: Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment testing required by Holland LP.
