Wheeler Clinic utilizes a curriculum-driven, evidence-based model to assess individual needs and work towards reducing their involvement in the criminal justice system. Their services aim to support adults across a broad geographic area in Connecticut, including towns such as Berlin, Bristol, Middletown, New Britain, and Wallingford, among others.

Job Description

This is a robust internship opportunity within Wheeler Clinic’s Alternative in the Community (AIC) program, specifically tailored for Criminal Justice majors who are seeking to complete their Undergraduate degree.

As an intern with the AIC program, you will be involved in a program that delivers comprehensive, community-based intervention services. The core objective of the AIC program is to assess the needs of each individual client and implement strategies to reduce their involvement in the criminal justice system.

The services provided by the AIC program, which an intern will be exposed to and potentially assist with, include:

Substance use intervention: Providing support and resources for individuals struggling with substance use.
Trauma groups: Facilitating or assisting with groups designed to address and heal from trauma.
Skill building: Helping clients develop essential life skills.
Job development and placement: Assisting clients in finding and securing employment.
Case management: Providing individualized support and coordination of services for clients.
Educational, basic needs and vocational supports: Connecting clients with resources for education, essential living needs, and vocational training.
Gender-responsive programming: Offering services that are tailored to the specific needs and experiences of different genders.

Interns will work with adults who are referred to the program by the Office of Adult Probation, the court, or parole. The program serves clients from a wide range of towns, ensuring a diverse client base and exposure to various community dynamics.
