Crime Scene and Evidence Technician | City of Apopka
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the City of Apopka, located in Apopka, FL. As a municipal government, the City of Apopka provides essential public safety services to its community. This critical role ensures the integrity of criminal investigations and the administration of justice by meticulously managing evidence from crime scenes through to court proceedings. This position directly supports law enforcement officers and the legal system in serving the public.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Crime Scene Processing: Identify, document, collect, and preserve materials as evidence from crime scenes using measuring, testing, recording instruments, and digital cameras.
• Evidence Management: Serve as a custodian of evidence, ensuring compliance with state statutes and accreditation standards, maintaining chain of custody, and handling receiving, labeling, logging, packaging, and storing.
• Case Support & Coordination: Review and document evidence for investigations and court use, determine disposition for transfer to officers or agencies, coordinate evidence analysis, and prepare cases with legal teams.
• Testimony and On-Call: Attend court to provide testimony regarding evidence and offer on-call coverage for crime scene services during off-duty hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Administrative & Advisory Support: Respond to public inquiries about confiscated property, return property to owners, prepare unclaimed property for sale or disposal, perform general clerical work, and advise officers on evidence procedures.
The Must-Haves
• Background: An Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree, or specialized training equivalent to two years of college education with emphasis in forensic science, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
• Experience: Proficiency in handling and operating laboratory equipment and instruments, scientific software, design software, and photo imaging software; basic knowledge of digital cameras and photography for crime scene documentation.
• Skills: Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and legal procedure; ability to gather, organize, analyze, and evaluate data; capacity to give guidance to facilitate task accomplishment; adeptness in reading technical instructions and composing routine and specialized reports; ability to work rotating and various shift schedules, including on-call duties.
