This is an opportunity for University of Michigan-Flint (UM-Flint) students to work in the Department of Theatre and Dance’s costume shop. The department regards these temporary, part-time positions as internships, providing valuable real-world experience.
Job Title/Role: Student Employee / Intern (Costume Shop)
Job Summary/Overview:
The Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking energetic and detail-oriented students to join its costume shop. Students will gain practical, industry-quality, hands-on experience by working on actual productions under the supervision of professionals. This experience is highly beneficial for students’ resumes, future job applications, and graduate school applications, and is considered a crucial component for success in theatre and/or dance majors.
Responsibilities:
The primary duties involve contributing to the costume shop’s core function of building garments for the University’s five main stage drama, musical theatre, and dance productions. Specific responsibilities include:
• Garment construction: Actively participating in the creation and assembly of costumes.
• Laundry: Managing and performing laundry duties for costume pieces.
• Craft work: Engaging in various craft-related tasks pertinent to costume design and production.
• Stock organization/maintenance: Assisting with the organization and upkeep of costume stock and materials.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must meet the following criteria:
• Must currently be a UM-Flint student.
• Possess prior sewing experience.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in hands-on learning.
• Be available to work on weekends and evenings during production periods.
Modes of Work:
This position requires a fully onsite presence. All work must be conducted at a designated U-M owned or leased work location. The work mode is subject to change at the discretion of the hiring department and will be reviewed annually.
Other Important Information:
• Preferred Candidates: While all UM-Flint students are welcome to apply, preference will be given to current Theatre Design and Technology majors.
• Background Screening: All job candidates will undergo background checks upon acceptance of a contingent offer, conducted in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
