PROCESS IMPROVEMENT ANALYST SKILLBRDIGE INTERN | Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII
The Tone:
This is an unpaid internship opportunity at Newport News Shipbuilding, located in Newport News, VA, specifically for transitioning active-duty US military personnel through the Hire Vets Now (HVN) SkillBridge Program. HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding is the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and a key provider of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. This role offers transitioning military individuals a chance to gain real-world experience in process improvement, applying their military training and skills in a vital industrial setting that supports the nation’s defense. The intern will actively contribute to meaningful projects and collaborate with mentors and senior leadership to prepare for a potential full-time career.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Program Definition: Define continuous improvement programs that are strategically aligned with business objectives.
• Program Design: Design continuous improvement programs to ensure vertical and horizontal integration across the organization.
• Program Implementation: Implement continuous improvement programs effectively within the shipyard’s operations.
• Program Analysis: Analyze existing improvement programs and assess their potential results and impact.
• Team Facilitation: Facilitate and coach improvement teams to achieve project goals.
• Performance Metrics: Establish and maintain performance metrics to accurately measure the success of continuous improvement initiatives.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Active-duty US military personnel only, within their final 180 days of active-duty service, transitioning from military roles with comparable knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and military training.
• Experience: Candidates can begin applying within their final 12 months of military service to gain real-world experience in process improvement.
• Skills: Defining and designing improvement programs, implementing programs, analyzing program outcomes, facilitating and coaching teams, establishing and maintaining performance metrics.
• Bonus: Six-sigma certification.
