Position Description

As a Construction Intern, your primary goals will be to gain a comprehensive understanding of the construction process and to provide essential support to our Field Engineers and Office Engineers in field and materials management. This internship program offers a valuable opportunity for both the intern and Hensel Phelps to assess mutual fit for a long and successful career within our organization post-graduation.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Duties

  • Assisting with Subcontractor Management.
  • Developing skills in Submittal review.
  • Supporting RFI (Request for Information) development.
  • Participating in Layout and surveying activities.
  • Contributing to Daily reports.
  • Supporting Quality control initiatives and adherence to our safety plan.

Position Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer software, including:
    • Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel-based templates)
    • Prolog
    • Primavera
    • AutoDesk Suite
  • Candidates are preferred to be pursuing a 4-year degree in one of the following fields:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Structural Engineering
    • Architecture
    • Construction Management

Physical Work Classification & Demands

Classification: Moderate Work – Requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The individual in this position will periodically engage in the following actions, with varying frequency based on workflow and office activity:

  • Walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type.
  • Walking: Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery (calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, printer).
  • Frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders on various administrative topics.
  • Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.
  • Regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
  • Constantly reads written communications, views mail submissions, reads blueprints, and takes/verifies field measurements.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
  • Balancing: Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling and to walk, stand, or crouch.
  • Stooping: Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
  • Requires visual acuity and the ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
  • Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
  • Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
