Job Description: Communications Intern
This is an internship opportunity at the Tahirih Justice Center, focused on communications.
Who You Are (Ideal Candidate Profile):
The ideal candidate is a champion for human rights with a passion for achieving justice for all survivors of violence. They strongly believe in the power of storytelling, public relations, communications, and marketing to influence public opinion, which in turn can lead to changes in laws and policies. The candidate should possess excellent writing skills, be savvy with social media, and demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities.
What You’ll Learn (Learning Opportunities):
As an intern, you will gain insight into how Tahirih strategically uses communications to achieve its policy advocacy, programmatic, and fundraising objectives. You will learn how to ensure that all external communications are survivor- and client-centered, inclusive, and demonstrate cultural humility. The internship offers the chance to support and learn from every member of Tahirih’s Communications Team, as well as collaborate with members of the public policy and client services teams.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):
• Media Monitoring: Help track and monitor Tahirih’s media coverage.
• Social Media Management: Support the posting, tracking, analysis, and reporting of social media metrics across platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter (familiarity with these is essential).
• Website Content: Update the Tahirih website with new content (knowledge of HTML and WordPress is a plus).
• Content Creation: Work with subject matter experts and communications staff to draft emails, social media content, web posts, and other communications that translate complex topics into accessible and compelling content.
• Material Development: Assist in creating, researching, and compiling various educational and outreach materials.
• Campaign Support: Collaborate with the Communications Team to implement activities for audience engagement and create content for outreach and fundraising campaigns.
• Special Projects: Work on specific projects to advance the Communications Team’s goals.
• Research: Research best practices for nonprofit communications.
• General Communications Tasks: Handle other communications tasks as needed.
Compensation:
Tahirih provides interns with a $5000 stipend for completing 300 hours over the summer period. This stipend will be prorated based on the actual number of hours completed. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
