Clean Water Action is a national, grassroots environmental organization dedicated to protecting the environment and safeguarding public health. We strive to promote the passage of strong environmental laws and assist communities in addressing local environmental problems. Clean Water Fund complements this work by providing research, education, organizing, and technical assistance. Our goal is to strengthen grassroots environmental efforts nationwide, promoting the public interest on critical issues related to water, natural resources, health, and a healthy economy. Together, Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund collaborate on various campaigns and programs.

About the Clean Energy Communications Internship

Clean Water Fund is seeking a passionate Clean Energy Communications Intern to support the Massachusetts team. This role will primarily focus on digital communication with the public and our members for their Clean Energy and Climate Justice campaign. Key areas of work include social media communications, as well as community and membership engagement. This is a temporary, paid, hybrid summer internship, based out of our Boston office. The position offers significant flexibility, support, and the opportunity for meaningful on-the-ground impact.

Responsibilities

  • Develop clear, engaging content for websites, blogs, newsletters, and email communications to advance clean energy initiatives in Environmental Justice communities.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, document key takeaways, track action items, and contribute to strategic planning and execution of Clean Water Fund’s clean energy outreach goals.
  • Conduct clean energy-relevant research, including watching interview recordings, transcribing, and pulling quotes suitable for social media.
  • Assist in developing outreach materials, fact sheets, and educational resources related to clean energy access and climate justice in Massachusetts.
  • Create compelling multimedia and social media content that strengthens public engagement around clean energy advocacy campaigns.
  • Support the planning and facilitation of community workshops and webinars focused on clean energy and climate justice.
  • Coordinate volunteer engagement efforts, including outreach communications and database management, to sustain clean energy campaign momentum.
  • Provide cross-team coordination and administrative support for clean energy projects, events, and campaign initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a High School diploma.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from college/university in a relevant field such as environment or community development.
  • Passion for protecting human health and the environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both in writing and speaking.
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively toward shared goals.
  • Understanding environmental and climate justice principles is a plus.
  • Interest and engagement with other social justice issues is a plus.
  • Familiarity with campaign organizing in a variety of racial and socio-economic communities, and/or communications is highly desired.
  • Candidates must be able to complete work and communicate virtually through email, Google Docs, and Slack.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CANVA is a plus.

Internship Details

  • Internship Date Range: May 25, 2026 – August 14, 2026
  • Location: Hybrid preferred; fully remote may be considered. Candidates located within commuting distance of one of our state offices are preferred, with a strong preference for candidates in the Boston area.
