The Tone:
This is an hourly, overtime-eligible role at Amentum, supporting government programs through diligent claims administration. Amentum provides essential services, and this role contributes significantly by performing the initial review and analysis of critical claims. The work of a Law Clerk I directly impacts claimants by ensuring eligibility and compensation decisions are accurate and well-supported, adhering strictly to established policies and procedures.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Claim Eligibility Review: Perform the initial review of claims for eligibility and/or compensation, with a primary focus on Eligibility Decisions and Non-Economic Loss Awards.
• Information Management: Review claim file contents against documentation checklists, identify missing information, and formulate appropriate requests to claimants or their counsel.
• Guidance and Approval: Consult with and obtain guidance and approval from team leaders to resolve questions and concerns regarding appropriate claim determinations.
• Stakeholder Communication: Proactively communicate with claimants and their attorneys to clarify issues and provide guidance on VCF policies, procedures, and operations.
• Documentation and Management: Accurately and completely document activities and conversations in Claim Notes and effectively use the Claims Management System for all aspects of claim review.
• Recommendation Drafting: Draft well-written and complete recommendations for the consideration of the Special Master about the appropriate disposition of claims.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Requires a Law degree, or current attendance at an ABA-accredited law school having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience.
• Experience: Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing claims with the ability to apply established criteria to determine legal sufficiency, alongside experience in analyzing and organizing documents for supporting evidence and identifying mechanisms to perfect insufficient claims.
• Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; excellent research and writing skills; sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources; hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications including databases and strong Excel skills.
• Bonus: Experience in government programs or litigation support; prior experience demonstrating capabilities and communication skills to successfully interact with clients and attorneys; demonstrated experience working with complex statutory and regulatory schemes; flexibility and creativity in the application of existing policies.
