About the Role

As a Civil Engineering Intern within the Structural Inspection group, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and integrity of the New York City Transit (NYCT) infrastructure. Under the guidance of senior engineers, you will be involved in comprehensive inspections, defect analysis, repair planning, and project management tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive, up-close inspections of various NYCT concrete and steel structure types to meet external and internal inspection mandates.
  • Maintain and update defect databases.
  • Analyze identified defects and contribute to the preparation of designs and repair plans.
  • Supervise on-site testing activities.
  • Perform cost estimates and prepare scopes of work and project profiles for repair work. This includes work with in-house forces, vendor contracts, and/or capital programs within the Infrastructure Engineering subdivision.
  • Attend planning, design, and field meetings to represent the Division.
  • Under the supervision of senior engineers, perform final inspections of completed work and generate punch lists for Capital Projects.
  • Research existing conditions, record drawings, and maintain files.
  • Be trained to respond to trouble calls and emergencies related to structural conditions on a 24-hour/7-day-a-week basis.

Compensation

Civil Engineering Intern: $68,709.00 per year

Work Location & Hours

Work Location: 130 Livingston Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Hours of Work: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Education And Experience

  • A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.

Desired Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite and internet and mobile applications.
  • Familiarity with Micro Station and nonconformity databases.
  • Knowledge of structural inspection techniques for concrete and steel.
  • Ability to read and write technical drawings and correspondence.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction design and code issues covering multiple city agencies.

Candidates will be selected based on an evaluation of their education, skills, experience, and an interview. All selected candidates will undergo a full background investigation, including verification of employment and education. Discrepancies may lead to dismissal.

Appointment may be at a comparable level to the current level of a selected candidate. As an employee of MTA NYC Transit, you may be required to complete an annual financial disclosure statement with the state of New York, if your position earns more than $101,379.00 per year (this amount is subject to change) or if the position is designated as a policy maker.
