About the Power District

The rapidly growing Power district within Kiewit is a multi-faceted division renowned for its best-in-class technical expertise, primarily focused on the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) delivery model for power facilities. Position Overview – Civil Design Intern

The Civil Design Intern role is an exciting opportunity for individuals to apply fundamental engineering drafting principles and procedures. This position involves performing basic engineering drafting work, developing drawings and models based on information provided by engineers and designers, and operating under close guidance and direction. The intern will coordinate with other design group team members to review and exchange project information crucial for design and development. Specific design functions for assigned projects will also be performed.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities for the Civil Design Intern include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Utilizing the Operations Drafting/Design Standards Manual for all tasks and assignments.
  • Implementing each task or assignment according to applicable documents within the Department Quality Standards and Procedures.
  • Providing regular project progression updates and/or reporting issues to the Lead Designer as required.
  • Informing the Manager and/or Lead Designer of any project decisions that deviate from Kiewit Power Engineers standards.
  • Learning applicable engineering national and local codes.
  • Participating in required meetings, such as Weekly Project Meetings.
  • Assisting project team members in job-related activities.
  • Checking designs for consistency, safety, operability, and maintenance requirements prior to submission for formal checking.
  • Developing 3D models using drawings, sketches, and design skills.
  • Cultivating the capability to check and navigate 3D models to identify interferences and ensure constructability.
  • Creating plan drawings and detailed designs.
  • Filing master sets/originals, superseded drawings, and originals in a timely manner as required.
  • Completing as-built drawings by incorporating RFIs (Requests for Information), ECNs (Engineering Change Notices), and red-marked drawings from construction to develop “Conformed to Construction Records.”
  • Performing various miscellaneous tasks to support project development.
  • Creating guidelines, checklists, or other applicable knowledge-based documents as assigned.
  • Providing “lessons learned” throughout the project utilizing the Lessons Learned Database.
  • Gathering necessary information to develop accurate drawings.
  • Resolving checked drawing comments and demonstrating understanding of the feedback provided.

Qualifications

To successfully perform this job, an individual must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

General Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with other team members and disciplines, both verbally and in written form.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Proven ability to interpret multi-discipline engineering and vendor documents.
  • Must be able to represent Kiewit Engineering and Design in a professional manner to owners, contractors, vendors, and all other external contacts.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in utilizing computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, GeoPak, and NavisWorks.
  • Basic knowledge of the latest computer operating systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through emails and utilize electronic meeting requests.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheets and databases.

Education

  • Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Aided Design & Drafting Technology or a related engineering field.

Travel

A Civil Design Intern may be required to serve as a field designer, providing on-site support for projects. This can involve:

  • Performing field measurements.
  • Assisting construction personnel in reviewing structural drawings and field construction.
  • Researching Kiewit Power Engineers drawings, vendor drawings, O&M manuals, and other pertinent information.
  • Coordinating efforts with the Kiewit Power Engineers office.

  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as required.
