Location: 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY

General Description:
The Catering Intern will work closely with the Senior Catering Manager at Iona University, learning the intricacies of catering from both a sales and operations perspective. This role offers the opportunity to directly work with catering clients, coordinating event details like menu selections, tastings, linen rentals, setup, and floral design. You will also learn to properly set up and execute events following specific timelines and guidelines.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
• Strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

• Proficiency in using various computer programs and office equipment
• Experience with MACs and PCs
Preferred Skills:
• Interest in sustainability
• Experience with Farm to Fork practices
• Knowledge of Quality Assurance
• Understanding of current catering trends
• Experience with menu development
• Familiarity with Contract Food Service Management
Job Responsibilities:
• Assist in planning and organizing events
• Help with event setup and breakdown when needed
• Complete safety training for proper lifting techniques
• Assist the culinary team in developing custom event menus
• Collaborate with vendor partners (rental companies, florists, bakeries, etc.) to arrange services
• Assist with staff scheduling
• Market catering services both on and off campus
• Assist with inventory management
• Help train staff on catering standards
• Contribute to maintaining a positive and motivated work environment for staff.
Learning Objectives:
• Develop awareness and understanding of working in a diverse environment.
• Gain practical experience in various aspects of the hospitality industry.
• Cultivate outside sales skills with the director of catering, seeking new opportunities and venues.
• Understand the event planning process from initial client contact to execution.
• Learn to create event pricing and fees, tailoring events to individual needs and wants.
• Master effective communication to meet expectations and ensure everyone is on the same page.
• Gain experience in negotiating contracts, fine-tuning event details, and creating event blueprints.
• Understand contract terms, services provided, solidifying dates, deadlines, staffing needs, event policies, parking arrangements, etc.
• Learn to examine financials, collect payments, and manage menu costing.
• Develop skills to follow up with clients, identifying event strengths and areas for improvement, fostering ongoing client relationships.
