Description: Carolinas Public Affairs Internship

This internship within Duke Energy’s Corporate Communications Carolinas Public Affairs team, operating in both North and South Carolina, provides college students with hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. The team manages media strategy, communications consulting, executive positioning, and the development and implementation of integrated, strategic communications plans to support legislative, regulatory, and public affairs strategies for the Carolinas region.

Intern Responsibilities:

The intern will gain experience in various Duke Energy functional areas, including:

Corporate Communications: Contributing to the overall communication strategies of the company.
Public Affairs: Learning about and participating in the company’s engagement with the public and government.
Stakeholder Engagement: Interacting with and building relationships with key stakeholders.
Regulatory Affairs and Policy: Gaining an understanding of the regulatory landscape and company policies.

The internship is designed to be multifaceted and provide a comprehensive understanding of corporate communications within a large energy company.

Currently pursuings:

Basic/Required Currently pursuings:
• Currently enrolled and pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications, or a related discipline (e.g., Public Affairs, Public Policy, Political Science, Government).
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
• Valid driver’s license.

Desired Currently pursuings:
• Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
• Junior or senior classification.
• Previous internships or work experience in a related field.
• Demonstrated effective leadership skills through on-campus, extracurricular/volunteer activities.
• Participation in student journalism or public relations organizations (e.g., PRSA).
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately using written and verbal communications.
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office products.
• Familiarity with AP Style.

Specific Requirements:
• Ability to work full-time (Monday-Friday) for 12 weeks in the summer of 2025.
• Willingness to work from both remote and onsite locations (primarily in Charlotte, NC, or Raleigh, NC).
• Travel: 5-15%
