About the Business/Accountant/Finance Intern Position

This is an un-paid Internship position at La Jolla LASIK Institute, with an approximate commitment of 10 hours per week for a minimum duration of 1 year. The internship is designed for individuals eager to “HELP US TAKE LA JOLLA LASIK INSTITUTE TO THE NEXT LEVEL!” and can be pursued for academic credit through programs like the Academic Internship Program (AIP) at UCSD.

The CEO, Angela Nahl, MD, emphasizes that this role offers the opportunity to learn to manage and lead a finance team, taking on responsibilities for oversight, administration, and hands-on execution. The intern will learn from both the CEO and the bookkeeper, with decisions and effectiveness significantly impacting the company’s performance as it grows. Financial reporting and decision-making are highlighted as having a big impact on overall company success.

Key Learning and Responsibilities will include:

Developing, creating, and tracking daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Ensuring all electronic and paper filing systems are current and well organized.
• Creating a new budgeting process that effectively tracks actual expenses.
Analyzing current software, recommending any necessary changes, and implementing those recommendations.
• Collaborating with the bookkeeper to ensure accuracy of financial statements.
• Completing special projects and additional duties as required.
• The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to make and implement many of these decisions independently once competency is demonstrated to senior management.
• Assisting the clinic with administrative tasks, such as organizing patient ledgers.

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

Majors preferred: Accounting, Economics, Management Science, Mathematics, Statistics. Other desired majors include Math-Computer Science, Business Analytics, Applied Mathematics, Rady MBA, Master Business Analytics, Master Finance, Leadership of Healthcare Organizations, Data Science and Engineering, Master Business Administration, Master of Finance, Graduate Students, and Applied Math.
Minors preferred: Accounting, Business, Management Science, Math-Computer Science, Mathematics (Applied), Economics, and Mathematics Education.
Strong ability in Excel.
• Experience with QuickBooks is a plus but not required.
• Previous experience in accounting.
Great communication skills.
Excellent analytic skills and strong attention to detail.
Strong computer skills, specifically with GSuite programs.
