Assurance Experienced Associate | BDO USA

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at BDO USA, with opportunities in various locations including California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York (NYC/Long Island/Westchester), New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, and Washington. BDO provides assurance, tax, and advisory services to clients across the U.S. and around the world, helping them navigate complexity. This role is critical for preparing accurate financial statements with disclosures, applying basic areas of GAAP, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing various control systems, ensuring clients have confidence in their financial reporting.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Statement Preparation: Take responsibility for drafting basic sets of financial statements complete with necessary disclosures, and apply foundational areas of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to client transactions as required.
• Internal Control Evaluation: Apply knowledge of the collective effect of various factors on control effectiveness, identify and consider applicable policies and regulations, and document, validate, and test the operating effectiveness of client internal control systems.
• Accounting Principle Application: Provide support for accounting conclusions using authoritative literature, research intermediate accounting areas independently, and form initial opinions on the correct accounting treatment.
• Auditing Standards Adherence: Develop and apply an intermediate knowledge of auditing theory and a sense of audit skepticism, utilizing BDO audit manuals and applying professional standards (GAAS) to diverse client situations.
• Engagement Team Contribution: Document findings in line with BDO policy, identify deviations and notify senior team members, identify instances where testing may be reduced or expanded, and contribute ideas and opinions to the engagement teams.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, or possess a Bachelor’s degree in another field with CPA certification to ensure a strong foundational understanding of financial principles.
• Experience: Bring one or more years of prior relevant audit experience gained within public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services, demonstrating practical exposure to assurance practices.
• Skills: Possess strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with clients and firm professionals, coupled with solid analytical and diagnostic abilities to resolve complex issues. Exhibit strong project management skills, the ability to successfully multi-task independently and within a group, and a focus on details and accuracy within a deadline-driven environment.
• Bonus: A Master’s in Accountancy is preferred; actively pursuing or already holding a CPA license is a strong advantage. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and experience with specialized assurance applications and research tools are also beneficial.
