About Boston University Hillel:

Boston University Hillel is located on the campus of a world-class university in Boston, near Fenway Park. It serves a large population of Jewish students—4,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students. Its mission is to inspire, educate, and empower BU students to lead meaningful and joyous Jewish lives. Annually, they engage 4,000 students, cultivate in-depth relationships with 600, and facilitate travel experiences for 200. They boast 160+ student leaders and 120+ lay leaders. BU Hillel is affiliated with Hillel International.

Job Description: Assistant Director

This is a significant role at BU Hillel, the largest private university Hillel serving Jewish students globally. The Assistant Director will lead the undergraduate student life and engagement pillar, overseeing programs and initiatives for approximately 4,000 students and managing a team of six staff members. The position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the CEO and COO.

Responsibilities:

Supervision and Management: Supervise, mentor, and support a team of six staff members (Springboard Fellows, Engagement Fellows, Israel Fellows, IACT/Birthright professionals, Wellness professionals). This includes creating annual performance plans, conducting performance reviews, weekly one-on-one meetings, and developing professional development plans.

Student Engagement: Collaborate with the CEO and Executive Director to develop and implement a comprehensive student engagement strategy. This involves managing a cohort of 200+ student entrepreneurs and 40+ initiatives, recruiting and supervising interns/fellows (75+ annually), overseeing on-campus events (signature events, pop-up events, student-led programs), connecting with prospective students and families, and collecting engagement data in partnership with Hillel International.

Marketing: Manage all student life marketing efforts across various platforms (email, social media, website, print materials, video, photography). Supervise a communications intern team.

Immersive Travel: Lead recruitment for 250+ short and long-term immersive travel programs (Israel trips, alternative service trips, short-term retreats). Manage logistics for Israel travel programs (including Birthright trips, Israel Uncovered, and Onward Israel). Oversee 5-10 short-term retreats annually and coordinate one annual alternative spring break service trip.

Jewish and Israel Education: Partner with the rabbinic team to implement programs, including Shabbat and holiday programs and the Jewish Learning Fellowship (reaching 250+ undergraduates). Teach or facilitate Jewish Learning Fellowship classes.

Qualifications:

Significant experience in Jewish communal life (Hillel, Jewish non-profit, Jewish camping, Jewish education, rabbinic leadership) OR significant experience in relationship-based work (student engagement, community partnerships, non-profit management, corporate social responsibility, arts management) OR significant for-profit experience with a strong Jewish lay leadership background.
5-8 years of experience.
• Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred (rabbinic, Jewish education, business, social work, or other relevant fields).
• Strong understanding of human motivation and the ability to connect individual passions to Hillel’s mission.
• Proven ability to manage teams and work independently and collaboratively.
• Entrepreneurial spirit and comfort with ambiguity.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to pluralism and a strong Jewish identity.
