Analytical Department Intern | State of Ohio
The Tone:
This is a part-time internship at the Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel, located in Columbus, OH with a flexible hybrid work environment. The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel serves as the State’s voice for millions of Ohio residential utility consumers. This role is crucial in helping consumers, including at-risk and low-income Ohioans, by ensuring the affordability, reliability, and equitableness of their electric, natural gas, telephone, and water utility services.

• Mission: Analyzes and researches utility service costs and collection to ensure affordable, reliable, and equitable services for Ohio consumers.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Utility Analysis: Conduct analysis and research on utility service costs and their allocation among consumer groups, supporting OCC’s mission.
• Record Examination: Systematically review and assess utility company accounting, financial records, and historical and current utility rates.
• Data Verification: Scrutinize and verify utility data concerning service reliability, marketing practices, and the protection of consumer information.
• Documentation & Procurement: Draft precise written requests for essential data for research and analysis, and assist in preparing requests for proposals, including work requirements, to engage consultants.
• Issue Support: Gather and interpret relevant materials and prepare associated reports to support the development of legal cases and policy issues, and research utility-related inquiries from the General Assembly and the public.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Accounting, Finance, or a similar field, and current enrollment in an accredited post-graduate program pursuing a graduate degree in Economics, Accounting, Finance, or a similar field.
• Experience: Thorough practical knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for analytical and reporting tasks.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to conduct online research; a demonstrated commitment to public service; and strong, well-developed writing skills.
• Bonus: General knowledge of administrative rules, policies, procedures, judicial and administrative proceedings and processes, legislative processes, legal advocacy, and federal and state governing regulation of utilities.
