Machine Learning Engineer Intern (E-commerce Governance Algorithms) – 2026 Summer (BS/MS) | ByteDance

The Tone:
This is a full-time internship at ByteDance, potentially in-person, with opportunities in the Los Angeles, CA area. ByteDance, founded in 2012, builds a suite of products including TikTok, Lemon8, CapCut, Toutiao, Douyin, and Xigua, aimed at inspiring creativity and enriching life. This role is crucial to the E-commerce Governance and Experience team, which is responsible for ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of the marketplace for users, sellers, and creators. The intern will contribute to maintaining platform integrity by detecting various risks that could compromise user trust.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Algorithms: Design and implement algorithms to detect and control risks and frauds in content, products, sellers, or creators.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with strategy, product managers, policy, and operations teams to help define products.
• Initiatives: Drive initiatives from an engineering viewpoint, contributing to product development.
• Platform Trust: Ensure the safety and trustworthiness of the marketplace for users, sellers, and creators.
• Quality Systems: Contribute to user satisfaction by working on policies, rules, and systems to ensure platform quality.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a BS/MS degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; an understanding or keen interest in machine learning, NLP, or computer vision.
• Experience: Must be able to commit to a 12-week full-time work period during Summer 2026.
• Skills: Familiarity with programming languages such as C++, Python, Go, or Java.
• Bonus: Interest or experience in anti-fraud, anti-spam, platform-integrity, or similar fields; a profound sense of responsibility, coupled with exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
