[2026] Applied Scientist – PhD Intern | Roblox

The Tone:
This is an internship at Roblox, located in San Mateo, CA. Roblox builds tools and a platform that empowers a global community of developers and creators to bring 3D immersive digital experiences to life, with a vision to connect a billion people with optimism and civility. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of human interaction and contribute to Roblox’s ambitious goal of dominating 10% of the gaming market. Interns will solve unique technical challenges at massive scale, enabling AI-driven creation and concurrency while creating safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.

• Mission: Drive a project from ideation to experimentation, production, or publication, focusing on the hardest problems affecting massive scale with 112+ million daily active users.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Experimentation: Prototype and experiment with advanced AI, machine learning, and 3D technologies to solve real-world challenges at scale.
• Development: Translate cutting-edge research into production-ready features by working alongside world-class engineering and product teams.
• Delivery: Develop and deliver solutions that enhance user experience, safety, and creativity on a global platform.
• Project Management: Drive a project from ideation through experimentation to production or publication, with the possibility of continued collaboration.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Pursuing a PhD in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with a thesis aligned to Roblox’s research areas.
• Experience: Deep expertise in a relevant technical domain such as deep learning, computer vision, NLP, reinforcement learning, or distributed systems, including experience building and optimizing large-scale systems.
• Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Go, Java), and a strong research track record evidenced by multiple publications and presentations in top-tier, peer-reviewed venues.
