Job Description, Detailed

This is for an Actuarial Financial Analysis and Modeling Intern within the Corporate Actuarial Department, specifically supporting the Assumptions team. The intern will contribute analytical and technical skills to help achieve the strategic objectives of the team.

Reporting Structure: The position reports directly to an Associate Actuary.

Location & Schedule: The role can be based out of Security Benefit’s offices in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas, or Des Moines, Iowa. For the right candidate, remote work is also an option. The company operates on a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility between remote and on-site work.

Key Responsibilities:
Data Management: Conduct data manipulation, organization, and analysis, including collecting, compiling, and analyzing policy-level data.
Reporting & Documentation: Assist with updating and improving reports, spreadsheets, and documentation, as well as with assumption documentation and inventory.
Modeling & Analysis: Contribute to attribution analysis of assumptions using Prophet Modeling software.
Assumption Setting: Assist with the actuarial assumption setting process, ensuring strict compliance with the assumption governance framework.
Collaboration: Develop strong working relationships by collaborating with other internal departments and business units, such as Valuation, Product Development, Planning, and Finance areas.

Required Qualifications & Skills:
Academic Status: Must be a current, full-time college student at the sophomore to graduate level.
Majors: Pursuing a degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Finance, or Computer Science.
Availability: Available to work 10 – 20 hours per week, beginning in Fall 2025. This is a continuous internship, with the expectation to work during and between semesters, including full-time over the summer; it is not a summer-only internship.
Technical Proficiency:
Required: Advanced Excel knowledge/skill, including familiarity with functions and the ability to create, edit, and use macros.
Preferred: Demonstrated ability with Visual Basic coding, SQL, and/or R.
Actuarial Focus (Preferred): A commitment to pursue an actuarial credential, demonstrated by preparation for or credit from Society of Actuaries-administered exams.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong GPA in major and overall areas of study.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proven organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines (required).
Accuracy and strong attention to detail.
