Accounting Intern | Herzog

The Tone:
This is an Accounting Intern position at Herzog, located in St. Joseph, MO. Herzog is a nationally recognized leader with over 50 years of experience in the construction, operations, and maintenance of commuter rail, light rail, streetcar, and freight rail projects. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a professional setting, supporting the accounting team with day-to-day financial operations across multiple companies. The intern will build technical accounting skills and gain real-world exposure to job costing, financial reporting, and month-end close processes in a project-driven environment.

• Team: Supports the accounting team with day-to-day financial operations across multiple companies.
• Mission: To assist with day-to-day financial operations and support the accounting team by participating in various accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost accounting, and month-end close.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Excel, accounting/ERP system

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Transactions: Assist with processing accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
• Job Cost Accounting: Support job cost accounting by tracking project costs against budgets and contributing to financial reporting.
• Financial Close & Records: Help with month-end and year-end close processes and assist with data entry and maintenance of accounting records in the accounting/ERP system.
• Audit & Process Support: Gather and organize documentation for internal and external audit requests, and identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and procedures.

The Must-Haves
• Background: High School diploma or equivalent. Entry-Level. Candidates should have a foundation in accounting principles.
• Experience: No specific prior work experience required.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; strong analytical skills and attention to detail; excellent communication and organizational skills; a proactive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Bonus: Currently pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; familiarity with accounting or ERP software.
