ACCOUNTANT TRAINEE | California Department of Insurance

The Tone:
This is a permanent, full-time role located in Sacramento County, CA, with a hybrid telework schedule. The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is the consumer protection agency for the nation’s largest insurance marketplace, safeguarding all of the state’s consumers by fairly regulating the insurance industry. This Accountant Trainee role is vital to the Financial and Business Management Division, supporting the core financial operations by accurately processing and maintaining billing and receipts. You will contribute to the sound financial management of an agency overseeing an impressive $340 billion in annual direct premiums.

• Team: ADMINISTRATION AND LICENSING SERVICES BRANCH, FINANCIAL & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT DIVISION, ACCOUNTING SERVICES BUREAU, Revenue Section – Accounts Receivable (ARU). Reports to an Accounting Administrator I (Supervisor).
• Mission: Process and maintain billing and receipts activities within the Accounts Receivable unit, contributing to the financial accuracy of the Department.
• Tech Stack: Oracle Financials, Expense Tracking System, Accounting Financials, FI$CAL

What You’ll Actually Do
• Perform professional accounting duties of average difficulty in the processing and maintenance of billing and receipts activities within the Accounts Receivable unit.
• Assist with the review, analysis, and research of accounts and records as they relate to the accounts receivable process.
• Serve as a Billing/Receipts Specialist, helping with the generation, posting, and reconciliation of the Department’s billing and receipts transactions.
• Analyze, research, evaluate, and perform corrective actions or entries into various Accounts Receivable accounting systems including Oracle Financials, Expense Tracking System, Accounting Financials, and FI$CAL.
• Occasionally rotate amongst different areas within the Accounts Receivable unit for cross-training, knowledge retention, and absence coverage purposes.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level professional with education required to meet the minimum qualifications for the Accountant Trainee classification, focusing on core accounting principles.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience with State accounting principles, methods, and procedures.
• Skills: Accounting principles, methods, and procedures, account analysis, research, evaluation, financial data entry, and reconciliation.
