Accountant I or II | American Electric Power

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at American Electric Power, located in Columbus, OH. This role provides essential accounting support, maintaining accuracy, compliance, and financial integrity across the AEP system. As you progress, you will take on more complex assignments and greater review responsibility within a supportive environment.

• Mission: Owns the preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger close to ensure financial integrity and compliance.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft products, ERP systems, Peoplesoft

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare and review: Prepare and review journal entries and general ledger account reconciliations for accuracy.
• Ensure compliance: Ensure adherence to Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and assist with balance sheet reviews and detailed account analysis.
• Participate in closing processes: Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes, including variance analysis and financial integrity checks.
• Assist with reporting: Assist in preparing FERC financial reports and GAAP financial statements, including footnotes and Management’s Discussion & Analysis (MD&A).
• Provide support and analysis: Support internal management reporting, respond to auditor data requests, and provide analysis for regulatory filings and proceedings.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business with an Accounting concentration.
• Experience: Varies based on level, with 2 years of accounting experience required for the Accountant II position.
• Skills: Strong understanding of GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements, an analytical mindset with attention to detail and accuracy, the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, and excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Bonus: CPA or progress towards certification preferred, proficiency in Microsoft products, familiarity with ERP systems, and Peoplesoft experience.
