Accountant I | State of Colorado

The Tone:
This is an early career role with the State of Colorado, Judicial Department, located in Denver, CO, operating on a hybrid work schedule. The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This position plays a foundational role in maintaining the financial integrity and compliance of the Department through professional accounting work. The Accountant I contributes directly to the efficient and transparent management of public funds, supporting the department’s commitment to impartial justice.

The TL;DR

• Mission: To perform professional accounting work, ensuring accurate and compliant financial transactions for the Colorado Judicial Department.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Transaction Management: Prepare, review, and/or approve a variety of accounting transactions, including fund disbursements, receipts, deposits, journal entries, and intra-governmental transfers.
• Compliance Assurance: Ensure all accounting transactions rigorously adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, Judicial Branch Fiscal Rules, statutory mandates, and other authoritative guidance.
• Stakeholder Support: Provide responsive phone, email, and in-person customer service to Department personnel, vendors, and external customers.
• Professional Development: Participate in required meetings and trainings to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills.
• Operational Support: Execute additional duties as assigned to support the broader financial operations of the Judicial Department.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or a closely related field such as finance. This is an entry-level position.
• Experience: No specific years of experience are required; this role is distinguished by performing basic accounting duties and responsibilities.
• Skills: Application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), adherence to Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, understanding of Judicial Branch Fiscal Rules and statutory requirements, and customer service proficiency.
