The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Selfhelp Community Services, located in New York, NY (Hybrid). Selfhelp Community Services is dedicated to providing vital community support and services, and this role directly contributes to the organization’s financial health. As an Accountant, you will ensure the accurate management and reporting of financial information, directly impacting the ability of programs to serve the community effectively and maintain financial compliance. This position plays a critical part in supporting program operations through diligent financial oversight and collaboration.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Analysis: Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries, reports, and reconcile accounts, documenting all business transactions.
• Budget Management: Maintain and manage budgets for all programs, working closely with Program Directors on funding, spending, and timely P&L reports.
• Reporting & Reconciliation: Prepare monthly and annual financial closeout reports, including budget to actual reports, balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and bank reconciliations.
• General Accounting: Perform a range of accounting tasks, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank deposits and transfers, and maintaining cash and general journals.
• Compliance & Support: Assist Program Directors with required reporting for all funding sources and ensure adherence to organizational standards and mandatory trainings.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Associate’s Degree in Accounting with two years related experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with one year experience.
• Experience: Minimum of one year of experience in the non-profit sector.
• Skills: Computer literate with financial database software (Quicken, QuickBooks, Lotus 1-2-3), spreadsheets, databases, check printing, and word processing (Microsoft Suite); excellent verbal, written, and customer service skills; ability to multi-task and work independently with great attention to detail.
