Accountant 1 | State of Arizona Enterprise Technology (ASET)

The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role with the State of Arizona Enterprise Technology (ASET), specifically within the DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION, located in Phoenix, AZ. The department focuses on driving a safer transportation system for Arizona through collaborative efforts. This Accountant 1 position is critical for ensuring accurate and timely payments to contractors, consultants, and other entities, directly supporting the state’s highway construction program.

• Mission: Manage payment processes, oversee financial accounts, and ensure compliance for the state’s highway construction program.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Process Payments: Process payments to contractors, consultants, local governments, railroad, and utility construction, and other entities supporting the highway construction program.
• Manage Inbox: Oversee the Contracts Payable email inbox, assigning tasks to team members, and providing information or answers to incoming requests.
• Monitor Financial Data: Oversee all chart of account elements for contractor estimates, in-kind entries, and engineering consultant project closeouts.
• Conduct Audits: Oversee and support all internal and external audits related to the payments processed for the highway construction program.
• Improve Procedures: Update and develop desk procedures for the unit, incorporating elements of sustainability, training, procedure mapping, and SIPOCs, while ensuring prompt pay statuses adhere to Arizona Revised Statutes.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Completion of at least 24 semester hours of accounting from an accredited college or university, or equivalent professional level accounting experience. Core domain knowledge includes accounting principles, mathematical accuracy, and automated vendor payment processing.
• Experience: Experience utilizing automated accounting systems (ERP) to process vendor payments. Proficiency with Microsoft applications, general databases, and Google Suites, including the ability to prepare spreadsheets, correspondence, and modify reports using SQL inquiries. Experience processing invoices that do not perfectly match purchase orders and generating manual payment documents.
• Skills: Analytical skills to interpret financial data, research, and correct errors. Effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with staff and internal/external customers. Strong attention to detail, planning, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and deliver results.
• Bonus: Two years of governmental accounting experience or two years of professional level accounting experience in business or industry. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable 39-month driving history. Experience in process improvement activities and the ability to learn and apply LEAN concepts, principles, and tools.
