2026 Summer Student Internship – Legal | MTA Inspector General, Office of
The Tone:
This is a temporary legal student internship at the MTA Inspector General, Office of, located in New York, NY. There are two internship positions available. The Office of the MTA Inspector General is an independent oversight agency established to investigate and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse within the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and its subsidiaries. This role is crucial for supporting the legal and investigative functions of the office by providing essential research, analysis, and document drafting, directly contributing to the agency’s mission of ensuring accountability and integrity within the MTA operations. The internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical legal experience within a public oversight body.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct in-depth research on relevant legal cases, statutes, regulations, and other substantive legal or policy issues pertinent to the office’s investigations and oversight responsibilities.
• Analysis: Analyze complex data and information relating to active investigative matters, helping to identify key legal points and factual patterns.
• Drafting: Draft precise legal memoranda, reports, and other various legal documents as requested by the General Counsel and other legal staff members, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
• Meetings: Attend virtual meetings with the General Counsel and other members of the Legal and Investigative staff to observe discussions, contribute insights, and understand ongoing case developments and strategic approaches.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Applicants must be actively enrolled as a law student at an accredited law school at the time of application, demonstrating a foundational understanding of legal principles and a commitment to legal studies.
• Experience: No specific years of prior experience are required, but candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. The role is designed for students seeking practical legal experience within a government oversight agency.
• Skills: Possess strong computer proficiency, including the ability to operate effectively within a Microsoft Office 365 environment. Required familiarity extends to specific applications such as MS Office Outlook for communication, MS Word for document creation and editing, and MS Excel for data organization and analysis.
