Job Description: 2026 Summer Associate Program (U.S. offices, except Chicago)
This program offers an immersive experience designed to simulate life as an associate at Fish & Richardson. It aims to prepare summer associates to join the firm’s ranks by providing daily insights into the associate experience.
Program Focus & Development:
The program focuses on skills development through:
• Complex Client Work Assignments: Summer associates will engage in significant client work, providing practical experience.
• Training Programs: Various training sessions are offered to enhance legal and professional skills.
• Mentorship: Dedicated mentors provide guidance and support throughout the program.
• Social Events & Culture: The program includes social events and fosters relationships within a relaxed firm culture, encouraging interaction with fellow summer associates and attorneys.
• Firmwide Summer Associate Retreat: A special retreat is held, combining further training, networking opportunities, and social activities.
• City Exploration: Opportunities to explore the office’s city and experience local culture, guided by firm attorneys.
What You Will Do:
The responsibilities vary based on the summer associate’s chosen track:
• Patent Prosecution Summer Associates: Primarily involve drafting patent applications.
• Patent Litigation Summer Associates: Focus on conducting research and drafting memos for litigation cases.
• General Opportunities: Both tracks may offer opportunities to attend client meetings, depositions, and even trials, providing exposure to various aspects of legal practice.
Who You Are (Desired Qualifications):
Candidates for the Summer Associate Program should possess:
• Academic & Professional Excellence: A demonstrated record of high achievement in science or technology.
• Superior Writing Ability: Exceptional skills in written communication are essential.
• Curiosity & Motivation: Eagerness to learn how things work and a curious mindset.
• Law Student Status: Must be in good standing as a law student at an ABA accredited law school, with an anticipated graduation date of spring 2027.
• Enthusiasm & Challenge-Oriented: A positive attitude and readiness to take on challenges.
• Team-Oriented: Ability to thrive and contribute effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
• Passion: A strong passion for science, engineering, and intellectual property.
Specific Requirements for Patent Litigation and Patent Prosecution Summer Positions:
• Scientific or Technical Background: A degree and/or relevant experience in a scientific or technical field is required.
• Excellent Academic Credentials: Strong academic performance is a must.
• Superior Writing Ability: As noted above, exceptional writing skills are critical for these roles.
Salary:
