As New York State’s chief legal officer and the “People’s Lawyer,” the Attorney General heads the Department of Law, safeguarding the legal rights of citizens, organizations, and natural resources while vigorously protecting consumers, investors, charitable donors, public health, the environment, civil rights, wage-earners, and businesses. Exercising statutory and common law powers, this office oversees specialized units like the State Organized Crime Task Force and Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, with over 1,800 employees, including 700+ attorneys, operating independently across New York to defend the state’s interests.
