Job Description

This is an opportunity for a Fall 2025 Internship within HII’s Mission Technologies Division, specifically for an Engineer Software Intern (Requisition Number: 24122).

Employment Type: This is a Part Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt position.
Required Travel: The role requires minimal travel, ranging from 0 – 10%.
Anticipated Salary Range: The estimated annual salary range for this internship is $35,776.00 – $36,000.00.
Security Clearance: Candidates must have the Ability to Obtain a security clearance.
Level of Experience: This role is designated for an Intern.

Role Overview:
As an Engineer Software Intern, you will primarily support the Principal AI/ML Engineer. Your main objective will be to advance space simulation and support Artificial Intelligence (AI) development for a US Space Force (USSF) customer. This role involves close collaboration with a cross-functional team consisting of AI engineers, modeling and simulation engineers, product owners, and program managers.

Primary Responsibilities:
Your core responsibility will be to support the development of artificial intelligence models that are integral to a larger software pipeline and deliver significant value to the end customer. The primary focus of the job is to develop advanced AI to support space superiority analytics, multi-domain, joint service, and operations needs. These simulations are crucial and will support various critical functions, including:
• Force structure planning
• Joint Combatant Command analysis and operations support
• Space Force testing and training
• Research and development of space systems

Essential Job Responsibilities (As an Engineer Software Intern, you will):
Build software from source for different platforms using various compilers.
Develop acceptance, integration, and unit tests for a variety of technologies.
Develop new capabilities by leveraging existing libraries.
• Actively participate in software design meetings.
Participate in code reviews to ensure quality and best practices.
Perform issue backlog and board maintenance to keep projects organized.
Provide execution plan and status report inputs to track progress.
Write user and developer documentation to support software usability and future development.

Minimum Qualifications:
To be considered for this internship, candidates must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and must be actively working towards a Bachelor’s degree with up to 20% of the required credits completed. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate:
• A strong interest in Space Operations.
Solid Technical Writing Skills.
• A willingness to Tackle Difficult Problems.
• A willingness to Learn New Languages (e.g., AFscript).

Preferred Requirements:
Candidates with the following qualifications will be highly preferred:
Knowledgeable in agent-based, event-driven simulators.
Knowledgeable in at least one scripting language.
• Familiarity with using Git, GitLab, JFrog Artifactory, Jira, and Confluence.
• A strong willingness to learn and provide insight into the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration and Modeling (AFSIM), which is a C++ based modular object-oriented, multi-domain, multi-resolution modeling and simulation (M&S) framework for military simulations.
Prior internship or work experience within the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Physical Requirements:
