This is an opportunity for 2 Student Interns within the Parks and Recreation Department. The internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience in the field of parks and recreation.

Length of Internship:
The internship’s duration will be the minimum length of time required by the intern’s educational institution to meet graduation or class credit standards. There is a possibility for the internship to be extended beyond this period, subject to agreement between the Parks & Recreation Director and the intern.

Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this role is to assist the Parks and Recreation Department. This involves a variety of duties, including completing tasks, leading programs and events, attending meetings, and providing assistance across various divisions within the department. The goal is for the intern to gain a well-rounded experience through the assigned responsibilities. The work is performed under the direction and general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation and additional Parks Staff as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Program and Event Support: Oversee or assist with a wide range of departmental programs and events, specifically including youth programming, adult programming, and various special events and activities.
Divisional Support: Collaborate with department supervisors to assist, shadow, or perform assigned tasks in different divisions and facilities, such as recreation, administration/office, and special events. Interns may have the opportunity to spend additional time in areas of specific interest.
Documentation and Reporting: Prepare various reports and documents, including operating, activity, and statistical reports, as well as documentation for discipline cases or event recaps.
Meeting Attendance: Participate in departmental meetings, staff trainings, and coach’s trainings/meetings to stay informed and contribute.
Schedule Management: Maintain a flexible work schedule that ensures accessibility for citizens and effectively meets the department’s needs for programs, events, and meetings.
Public Relations and Outreach: Develop public understanding and encourage participation in parks and recreation programs through public relations activities. This includes interpreting the program’s philosophy and objectives to the public using suitable communication methods.
Relationship Building: Establish and maintain cooperative planning and working relationships with other public and volunteer community agencies.
Other Duties: Perform any other duties as prescribed by the Parks and Recreation Director or designated supervisor.

Knowledge and Skills Required:
Communication: Possess acceptable verbal and written communication skills.
Public Relations: Ability to develop public understanding and foster participation in programs through effective public relations activities.
Interpretation: Ability to clearly interpret the program’s philosophy and objectives to the public.
Collaboration: Ability to establish and maintain strong cooperative planning and working relationships with community agencies and volunteers.
Media Engagement: Ability to achieve public relations objectives through speaking engagements and the use of various media.

Tools and Equipment Used:
The intern must be capable of operating miscellaneous office equipment and other tools relevant to the position. This includes, but is not limited to, a personal computer, copier, fax machine, motor vehicles, recreation equipment, communication equipment, and related items.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical Demands: The role requires regular use of hands and fingers for handling objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Frequently, the employee will need to stand, walk, talk, or hear, sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: Work is typically performed either indoors at school gyms or outdoors at park facilities. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderate.

Reporting Structure:
This position directly reports to the Special Event Program Supervisor and also to the Recreation Coordinator as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Enrolled in High School
• Possession of a Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior experience with recreation and sports.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
