Job Description:
This is a part-time, 16-week summer internship designed to provide experience in water and wastewater engineering, along with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The intern will work under direct supervision, learning how to:
• Assist engineers and technicians in project design and preparation of plans and specifications. Assist inspectors with various field tasks.
• Perform routine tasks in the field, such as facility inventory, collecting measurements, taking digital images, and writing field notes (on paper or GPS Handheld Device).
• Perform routine editing of features and attributes in the GIS using ArcMap.
• Perform routine drafting using AutoCAD and ESRI Software.
• Perform other routine office duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
• Some knowledge of geography and GIS.
• General knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Ability to develop knowledge of computer aided drafting (CAD) systems and GIS mapping systems.
• Develop the ability to perform technical computations, to prepare draft cost estimates.
• Considerable ability to understand, follow, and transmit moderately difficult oral and written instructions, and to write clearly and legibly.
• Considerable ability to react to change productively and to handle other tasks as assigned.
• Must have a high school diploma and be enrolled in college in an engineering-related degree.
• Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Windows operating system is required.
• AutoCAD training is desired.
• Good interpersonal communications skills and ability to work in a team environment.
• Some education or experience in the water and wastewater industry, or related area providing familiarity with underground utilities principles, materials, and terminology is desirable.
• A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is required.
