Junior Data Engineering Intern – Summer 2026

ECS is seeking a Junior Data Engineering Intern to work in our Fairfax, VA office for the summer of 2026. This internship offers a unique opportunity to move beyond the classroom and gain firsthand experience with production-grade workflows and real-world datasets.

You will work alongside senior engineers and scientists to acquire hands-on experience in data infrastructure and engineering practices in support of a DoW Artificial Intelligence initiative. Job Description

ECS seeks an individual who is passionate about data, eager to learn, and excited to develop foundational skills in data engineering while contributing to meaningful projects. In this position, you will develop and maintain data pipelines and perform data analysis on GEOINT datasets, gaining experience with end-to-end data engineering processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Extract, transform and standardize data to prepare for ingest into Machine Learning (ML) development environments.
  • Assist with the design and development of data services.
  • Document data processes and workflows.
  • Complete data analyses, catering results to leadership in a holistic and easy-to-understand way.
  • Help ensure data quality and accuracy to support reliable analytics and insights.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously and successfully under changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to project discussions.
  • Help cultivate an environment that promotes customer service, excellence, innovation, collaboration, and teamwork.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Management, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience with Python and SQL.
  • Experience transforming and manipulating data sets.
  • Excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with ETL processes and data management concepts.
  • Experience working with cloud technologies (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.).
  • Experience with Databricks or Gitlab.
  • Experience with data visualization tools.
