Life Science Department Internship

General Description: This internship provides hands-on experience in zookeeping, focusing on animal care and welfare at the Belle Isle Nature Center. It’s designed for students currently enrolled in a science-related degree program at an accredited four-year college or university seeking college credit.
Responsibilities:
• Shadowing zookeepers in daily tasks like feeding, cleaning, and habitat maintenance.
• Following staff direction on duties, responsibilities, and safety protocols.
• Participating in special projects to benefit the animals.
• Observing animal behavior and contributing to animal welfare enhancements.
• Interacting with guests to provide a positive experience.
• Submitting a 2-3 page paper summarizing the internship experience.
Internship Details: Approximately 14 weeks in length with flexible hours and days, to be discussed upon hiring.
Qualifications:
• Junior or senior level status at a college or university (proof required).
• Letter of recommendation from a professor confirming college credit.
• Coursework in zoology, biology, animal behavior, or a related field.
• Self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
• Proof of a negative TB test within the last 12 months.
• Successful completion of a background check.
Working Conditions:
• Work is both indoors and outdoors, subject to seasonal weather.
• Exposure to animals with a risk of zoonotic disease transmission.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to perform moderate physical effort daily (walking, bending, stooping, lifting, standing).
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
