Job Description:

Position: Pharmacy Intern
Department: Inpatient Pharmacy
Schedule: Part Time

Summary:

This internship is a progressive program designed to scale with each year of the pharmacy curriculum. It involves supporting pharmacy operations, obtaining medication histories, and providing clinical support, evolving as the intern progresses through their academic years.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties:

• Provides exemplary customer service.

• Takes corrective action to improve performance.

• Being engaged in the department, including managing up, owning team decisions, and communicating and supporting departmental and or organizational initiatives.

Responsibilities by Professional Year:

Professional Year 1:
• Supports medication preparation and distribution.
• Receives medication deliveries.
• Performs cycle counts and stock rotations.
• Repackages medications.
• Operates pharmacy automation devices.
• Delivers and returns medications.
• Loads, refills, outdates, destocks, and unloads automated dispensing cabinets.
• Responds to nursing messages for medication replenishment.

Professional Year 2:
• All functions of Professional Year 1.
• Compounds non-sterile and sterile, non-hazardous and hazardous medications.
• Supports medication preparation and distribution in patient care areas.
• Manages controlled substance inventories.
• Receives orders into inventory.
• Dispenses medications to automated dispensing machines.
• Performs cycle counts of controlled substance inventory.
• Reviews reports of inventory movements and reconciles any discrepancies.

Professional Year 3:
• All functions of Professional Year 2.
• Obtains medication histories on assigned patients.
• Performs patient interviews to obtain medication information.
• Calls pharmacies or healthcare facilities to confirm medication regimens.
• Communicates medication-related issues to healthcare professionals.
• Writes formal notes in the electronic medical record.
• Provides support to the operations of the central pharmacy as needed

Professional Year 4:
• All functions of Professional Year 3.
• Serves as a “pharmacist extender.”
• Provides medication teaching to patients.
• Prepares pharmacy-to-dose consults for pharmacist review.
• Reviews patients for pharmacotherapy optimization.
• Provides pharmacotherapy recommendations to the medical team.
• Obtains medication histories on assigned patients.
• Performs patient interviews to obtain medication information.
• Calls pharmacies or healthcare facilities to confirm medication regimens.
• Communicates medication-related issues to healthcare professionals.
• Writes formal notes in the electronic medical record.
• Provide support to the operations of the central pharmacy as needed
• Completes other tasks assigned by the pharmacist.

• Must adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

Job Requirements:

• Requires a high school diploma and must be enrolled at an accredited school of pharmacy.
• Pharmacy intern license or eligible for a pharmacy intern license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• Previous pharmacy work experience is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written).
• Ability to work independently.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
• Basic computer proficiency; familiarity with Epic is desirable.
• Must maintain the required level of competency.
