Job Description: Staff Software Engineer I – Service Platform

Role Overview: Etsy seeks a Staff Software Engineer I to lead their Service Platform initiative and team. This role involves directing and implementing solutions for highly complex problems, influencing the entire department and customers in other domains. Responsibilities include setting technical direction for teammates, improving engineering quality, and supporting team growth. This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Etsy’s Developer & Service Platform group. Compensation includes salary ($204,000 – $240,000), equity, an annual performance bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package. The position is open to US-based candidates, with preference given to those near Etsy’s Brooklyn or San Francisco Bay Area offices (in-office attendance required once or twice a week depending on location). Etsy offers various work modes to accommodate individual needs.

Team Description: The role is within an established Service Platform team, part of a new organization focused on Developer and Service Platform tooling and support within Etsy’s Foundation initiative. Etsy has invested significantly in foundational infrastructure and its own service platform, supporting various teams and use cases. They seek a senior individual contributor with industry experience to lead technical design and planning, contribute to and support the service platform ecosystem, and guide decision-making.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

• Providing daily support to Etsy peers (documentation, pull request reviews, Slack support, feature audits, office hours, training).
• Managing technical projects in JIRA and leading team ceremonies (standups, sprints, etc.).
• Contributing to and leading all levels of service platform design and development.
• Collaborating with peers and customers to align roadmaps and OKRs.
• Mentoring junior team members in daily work and professional development.
• Providing detailed and constructive design and code reviews.
• Collaborating with other Staff Engineers to advance Etsy Engineering.

Qualifications:

• 7+ years of software/infrastructure engineering experience, with platform engineering experience preferred.
• Generalist familiarity with various technologies: CI/CD, observability, security, networking, containerized runtime environments, and platform software.
• Experience with tools and languages: Docker, Protobuf, Go, Python, Node, Java, Scala, Terraform, GitHub Actions, GKE or CloudRun.
• Ability to work with large and small codebases, simplifying complex systems.
• Adaptability to different programming languages and cloud-native environments (GCP a plus).
• Strong collaboration, communication, and mentoring skills.
• Leadership in technical decision-making.
• Ability to write understandable, testable, and maintainable code.
• Understanding of end-user impact and tailoring work accordingly.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers.
• Successful track record of complex project completion.
• Growth mindset and receptiveness to feedback.
• Strong sense of ownership and a desire to understand the “why” behind tasks.
