About SeniorLAW Center:

Founded in 1978, SeniorLAW Center is a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit public interest legal services organization dedicated to seeking justice for older people. It’s the only nonprofit in the state solely focused on providing legal assistance and protecting the rights of older Pennsylvanians. The organization prioritizes serving low-income individuals, cultural and racial minorities, the disabled, victims of crime and family violence, and those facing other vulnerabilities. Their work encompasses fighting senior poverty, fraud, and homelessness; providing protection from elder abuse and financial exploitation; enabling grandparents raising grandchildren; and improving access to justice. SeniorLAW Center offers a supportive and flexible hybrid work environment.

Job Description: Law Student Internship

SeniorLAW Center offers full-time summer internships and part-time internships/externships during the school semester for law students. The internships focus on advocating for and addressing the legal needs of older Pennsylvanians, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, veterans, minorities, immigrants, refugees, and other vulnerable populations.

Intern Responsibilities: Interns may handle some or all of the following:

• Client intake and interviews (in-person or by phone)
• Managing a small individual caseload (under supervision)
• Assisting legal staff with complex litigation and cases
• Developing community education materials
• Conducting outreach workshops and attending community events
• Conducting legal research, writing, and drafting
• Participating in systemic advocacy efforts
• Handling other office tasks and special projects

Qualifications:

Preferred: Second-year law students.
Considered: First-year students with bilingual abilities and/or strong public interest experience, or other relevant work/volunteer experience.
Required Skills: Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to work under pressure, superior writing and communication skills. Experience in a legal program or law office is preferred. Interest in and ability to work with older people, and sensitivity to diverse older populations are essential. A demonstrated commitment to public interest is preferred. Bilingual capabilities are a plus. Students should explore work-study, law school, or other external funding options and include this information in their cover letter.

SeniorLAW Center maintains strong internship/externship relationships with Villanova University, Temple University, Penn Law, and Drexel University law schools. Students from other law schools with externship programs are also welcome to apply.
